Belief in God is a major foundation of one’s spiritual life. 92% of Americans believe in God, according to the Pew Research Center's Forum on Religion & Public Life extensive survey on religion in America (published in 2008). Results from that study are given below.
71% are absolutely certain there is a God
17% are fairly certain
4% are not certain
5% don’t believe in God
3% don’t know if there is a God
There are differences in the way people conceive of God. A personal view of God suggests that he is a someone with whom people can have a relationship. 60% of the population believe in a personal God. 25% see God as in impersonal force. Here is a good definition of the personal God in whom I believe. “God is the personal Spirit who in holy love creates, sustains and orders all.”
God is characterized by supernatural and moral qualities. God’s supernatural qualities include those that are beyond human limitations. These include the fact that God is all-knowing (omniscient), all-powerful (omnipotent) and present everywhere at the same time (omnipresent). God’s moral qualities include his love, patience, grace, forgiveness and others.
Knowing God is a first step in progressing in one’s spiritual life. Jesus said, “Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent (John 17:3).”
This is what the Lord says:
“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom
or the strong boast of their strength
or the rich boast of their riches,
but let the one who boasts boast about this:
that they have the understanding to know me,
that I am the Lord, who exercises kindness,
justice and righteousness on earth,
for in these I delight,”
declares the Lord.
Your spiritual life addresses the deepest questions of meaning, purpose and reality. It seeks to answer questions such as, Who am I? Why am I here? and What is true? In my belief system spiritual life addresses the questions about God and our relationship to him. It suggests that there is someone who is greater than us and who is beyond this world. Finding inner peace. Clarifying your life's purpose. These are issues of our spiritual lives.
